Netzach Yisrael

Last week we mentioned the Netzach Yisrael Synagogue.

Sitting on the corner of Ibn Ezra and Ramban street, is a fabulously beautiful building.

This is the Yeshiva “Netzach Yisrael”.

The Yeshiva was founded by Rabbi Yisroel Zeev Gustman. Rav Gustman was a judge in Rabbi Chaim Ozer Court in Vilna. I personally had the pleasure of learning for a few days in his yeshiva before he passed on.


And since we are talking about Netzach Yisrael, here is a picture of Nili Street.

The connection?

Nili is an acronym for “Netzach Yisrael Lo Yeshaker” (The Eternal of Israel will not lie).

I will leave it to the readers to tell us the story behind “Nili Street”.

A Most Useful Street

Anyone traveling through Jerusalem lately can’t help but notice the train tracks and bus lanes that now crisscross through town. While (hopefully) adding some convenience for public transportation users, they tend to create a bit of challenge to get to certain streets for the rest of us traveling in cars.

One of the biggest challenges is getting from the Abu Tor / Derech Beit Lechem area to the Talbieh / Rechavia.

Once, one merely drove up Keren Hayesod and made a left to Talbieh at any number of corners. That option isn’t available anymore. If you get stuck on Keren HaYesod now, you end up having to go all the way up to Ramban Street before you can make a left.

The trick is a little street called Mapu (named after Avraham Mapu - father of the modern Hebrew novel).

Instead of bearing left on Keren HaYesod, bear right onto King David. After the King Solomon Hotel (on the corner with the Rosemary restaurant), make a left onto Mapu Street and cut straight across onto Jabotinsky.

This is the quickest way to get to Talbieh / Rechavia.
